Uterine cancer is also known as endometrial cancer and it refers to the cancer of the lining of the uterus. When talking about uterine cancer treatment we have to think about the fact that it is better to treat the condition before it spreads to other organs as well.

Before you start any kind of treatment for uterine cancer you should ask for a second option first and ask your doctor about the options that you have.

In case the cancer is at an early stage, in the majority of the cases it is enough to have a surgery to remove the uterus, the ovaries and the fallopian tubes. This procedure is known as hysterectomy.

Uterine Cancer Treatment

According to the extent of the cancer, we might be referring to two different kinds of hysterectomies as treatment for uterine cancer.

Total abdominal hysterectomy

During this procedure there is an incision made through the abdomen and through this incision and surgeon removes the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Additionally it is also possible that the lymph nodes of the pelvis may also be removed.

Radical hysterectomy

Just as the name suggests, through this uterine cancer treatment several parts of the pelvic area are removed, including the parametrial and the paravaginal structures. Nonetheless in the majority of the cases such procedure is not needed in this case.

The effectiveness of the treatment for uterine cancer

In case the problem is diagnosed at an early stage, the success rate of the treatment is of about 90%. This is why it is so important to find the source of the problem as soon as possible.

In case the patient ignores the abnormal bleeding for a long period of time, the chances of recovery decrease.

When thinking about the uterine cancer treatment, we have to note that the longer the symptoms are ignored, the deeper the tumor can grow into the tissue of the uterus and it also spreads to the surrounding body parts.

Radiation therapy

Just as in any other kind of cancer, through the radiation therapy there are high doses of X-rays targeted to the tumor to shrink it. As a treatment for uterine cancer there could be a machine used on the outside of the body, but it is also possible to have the source of the radiation introduced right near the tumor. It is possible to use the radiation alone, or after surgery.

Chemotherapy

In this case there are drugs used in order to kill the cancerous cells. This uterine cancer treatment is introduced into the body through an injection into a vein. The treatment is known to be a systemic treatment because it enters the bloodstream, travels to the cancer site and it kills the tumor. Nonetheless we have to add that this treatment for uterine cancer is not really common.

Hormone therapy

In this case there are female hormones introduced into the body in the form of pills that are supposed to kill the cancer cells. This uterine cancer treatment works with progesterone.
