A reproductive system is fundamental to all living beings for every species to procreate to produce more of its own kind. So what is the reproductive system and how is it differentiated in either sex among human beings?

What is the reproductive system (female)?

The female reproductive system consists of certain body organs situated in the pelvic region and the three main parts are the vagina, the uterus and the ovaries. While the vagina is the area that receives the sperm from the male, it is the ovaries that produce the egg that forms a union with the sperm giving rise to a new human, and the uterus that grows the fetus so developed.what is the reproductive system

The outer part of the vagina attaches to the female labia, vulva and the clitoris, whereas the inner part attaches to the cervix or the mouth of the uterus which in turn attaches to the two fallopian tubes on either side of the uterus.

What is the reproductive system is question answered not just by the listing of the female sexual or reproductive organs but also by looking at the processes that facilitate conception and reproduction.

A female becomes able to sustain a pregnancy soon after she reaches puberty which denotes the maturing or the female sexual organs.

This is signified by a female getting her first period, growing of breasts, and of pubic and underarm hair, which can occur between 11 and 16 years of age. This is the fertile period of a woman’s life which will continue up to 50 or so years of age.

The female reproductive system has a roughly monthly cycle (28 days on average) wherein the endometrial lining of the uterus thickens with blood and tissue in preparation for receiving a sperm. In the middle of the cycle, ovulation takes place, when an egg is released by the ovary. If the sperm unites with an egg to form an embryo, conception is said to have taken place. However if sperm and egg do not unite and conception doesn’t take place, the endometrial lining prepared to create a hospitable environment for implantation of an embryo starts to shed itself and this results in a woman’s monthly period.

What is the reproductive system (male)?

Whereas the female reproductive organs are located inside the body, the male organs are located outside. The male reproductive organs consist of the penis, and the scrotum which are the external organs and the epididymis, vas deferens, testes, and certain glands.

Like the female reproductive system, the male reproductive system attains the ability to reproduce at the time of puberty which in male also has external signs such as the deepening of the voice, facial and body hair, development of an Adam’s apple, and so on.

The question what is the reproductive system is not completely answered without mentioning the various fluids (such as the semen and sperm of the male and the vaginal lubrication of the female) the pheromones and the hormones (estrogen and progesterone being particularly important in the female and androgen and testosterone in the male) that are secreted and which facilitate conception and reproduction.
