Abortion means termination of pregnancy. For having an abortion, consult a gynecologist to confirm your pregnancy and find out the possible alternative abortion method suitable for your condition.
In your first visit, the gynecologist performs a test to confirm your pregnancy.
Once if your pregnancy is confirmed, counseling and pelvic examination will also be done as part of pregnancy tests. You are also informed about the alternative abortion methods.
If your pregnancy is six weeks or less, then RU486/PG is best alternative abortion method. RU stands for Roussel-Uclaf (the initials of the pharmaceutical company) and 486 is a lab serial number. PG is an abbreviation for a drug called Prostaglandin.
The Food And Drug Administration (FDA) approved both these drugs as an alternative abortion method. RU486 blocks the effect of progesterone, which is necessary for the maintenance of pregnancy.
However, prostaglandin when used in sufficient quantity causes the uterus to contract and expel the fetus or embryo.
RU486 can be used alone in very early pregnancy to expel the fetus but it becomes less effective as the days of pregnancy passes.
On the other hand, sufficient Prostaglandin can also be used alone to cause abortion but it leads to more side effects when used in high doses.
Therefore, a combination of RU486 and a little Prostaglandin dose provides you an effective and tolerable abortion. RU486/PG is an alternative abortion method, which is proven 94-96% effective in causing abortion up to 8 weeks of pregnancy.
If RU486/PG is your alternative abortion choice, then you will be checked for contraindications for both drugs. The contraindications of RU486 are blood clotting disorder, chronic adrenal gland failure, and kidney or liver failure.
The contraindications of prostaglandin are asthma, fibroid tumors, a previous cesarean, and a pregnancy with an IUD in place.
If there are no contraindications, you receive an information leaflet and an approval form.
Then after one week, in your second appointment, you will be given three oral tablets of RU486 (each 200 mg). With this, bleeding occurs within 24 hours (rarely 48 hours).
It is estimated that three out of every hundred women who take this pill will abort completely without using the drug ‘Prostaglandin.’ Remember bleeding occurs even if there is not complete abortion.
If you abort completely, then there will be no need for further treatment. However, if this doesn’t happen, you will be given Prostaglandin in your third visit after 38-48 hours.
Within about 4 hours (after taking Prostaglandin) you may get abort completely. 9 out of every 10 women get abort completely with Prostaglandin.
With Prostaglandin, you can have side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The bleeding that occurs during expulsion of fetus usually lasts for 8-15 days.
If you haven’t yet aborted, wait for some more time till you get aborted. Next, an ultrasound test will be conducted to check whether the products of conception in the uterus.
Still, if you haven’t aborted, then a surgical method [Surgical Abortion] will be an appropriate alternative abortion for your condition.
