A woman’s body is a complex thing, especially when you look at the reproductive system. There are a number of reproductive system diseases that a woman may suffer from. The term is given to the collective diseases that affect the organs, whether it is the ovaries or the fallopian tubes.
How dangerous are reproductive system diseases?
Many of the diseases are not contagious, but there are some that can be so it makes it important to have yourself checked out immediately.
Medical attention will also help to prevent any other problems occurring in the reproductive system, especially when it comes to the fertility of the woman.
There are some diseases that just affect the menstrual cycle and can be treated with the use of pills while others will need antibiotics and possibly surgery, if this is serious.
Reproductive system diseases affect the menstrual cycle
There are a number of diseases that affect the cycle, including Amenorrhea, Oligomenorrhea and Dysnmenorrhea. The first two will have an effect on the regularity of the periods while the final one affects how much pain is felt during the time.
Amenorrhea has two different types, primary and secondary, and it affects the ability to menstruate. Primary will delay the cycle from starting when a girl reaches reproductive age, while secondary causes the cycle to stop for six months or more.
Oligomenorrhea will have an effect on the cycle by stopping the periods every now and then – it causes an irregular cycle, which becomes extremely confusing and frustrating for many women.
Dysnmenorrhea is when the periods are extremely painful. This affects a small group of women and affects their daily life. The pain often shoots into the back and hips and even into the lower thighs. It often leads to women taking time off work for three days while the pain subsides but there are other women who suffer from it for the duration of their period and there is no known cure.
Reproductive system diseases affect reproduction
While the menstrual cycle diseases will affect the reproduction, there are treatments to help with it. However, there are some diseases that will affect the reproduction in other areas. The main two diseases are Cervical Erosion and Cervicitis.
Cervical Erosion occurs when there are ulcers in the cervix. These are spotted through an ultrasound and an examination of the cervix. They form as red and pink spots on the opening and there will be a discharge of mucus. This is something that can heal itself but it depends on the cause for the ulcers – there are times when medical attention is required.
Cervicitis is when the cervix becomes inflamed. The vagina will be well lubricated by mucus but this then offers a place for bacteria to grow and leads to other infections. This is also easy to transmit to a partner.
Reproductive system diseases affecting childbirth
Something that was extremely common before the time of good medical care was childbed fever; this was something that killed two of Henry VIII’s wives, Jane Seymour and Katherine Parr.
The medical term for this is Puerperal Fever and still affects some women. It usually occurs 10 days after a miscarriage has happened or a baby has been born and is due to the placenta becoming infected. If caught in time, doctors are able to administer treatment to save the mother – otherwise, it will cause death.
