We are continually instructed by doctors, fitness experts and even friends and family, that we should drink at least a litre of water a day in order to live a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle. How exactly though, does water benefit us? Here are seven reasons why drinking a litre of H2O a day can really benefit you, both physically and mentally:

Exercise well

The human body is mainly made up of water and exercise encourages the body to sweat, meaning that the body’s fluid levels drop. For this reason, it’s important that fluid levels are maintained and this means drinking plenty of water, before, during and after exercise.

Younger skin

Drinking lots of water is proven to flush out unhealthy toxins and bacteria that can cause spots, whilst keeping skin hydrated so it doesn’t become dry or flaky, thus keeping its youthful appearance.

Headache cure

Headaches are often caused by dehydration. For example, the headache that many of us associate with drinking alcohol is actually caused by dehydration. Next time you experience a hangover, before reaching for the pain killers, drink a large glass of water and wait half an hour to see if this helps.

Increased productivity

One of the more obvious changes you’ll notice is your increased concentration and the rate at which you get things done. Keeping hydrated will make your thoughts clearer and your body quicker, thus improving your ability to complete tasks quickly and effectively.

Detoxification qualities

Water is also imperative for a healthy digestive system, without which, waste cannot pass through your digestive system properly, causing constipation. Water also helps to flush out toxins and other waste, encouraging regular bowel movements- a vital part of a healthy gut. People prone to infection, such as those that suffer from recurring cystitis for example, are advised to drink plenty of water to reduce the risk of getting further infections.

Feel happier

Drinking water will keep your brain hydrated and cleanse your body, ultimately improving your mood, not to mention the lift that comes with physically looking and feeling better.

Dehydration

One of the most compelling reasons to drink water is that you can prevent some problems by doing so. Prolonged periods of low water intake can lead to a number of issues such as cholesterol problems, fits, constipation and long periods of severe dehydration, which can be harmful to your organs.
