Many studies have been conducted on the impact of stress on women who have lupus.

It has been determined that there are three basic reactions women, who have lupus, experience.

Some women with lupus experience stress in the same way as those who don’t have it. Some women experience a signs and symptoms of lupus when stress occurs.

The third type of reaction is one that actually brings on the symptoms of lupus. Some women are not even aware of their condition until they experience a stressful situation.

Normal Reactions to Stress in Women with Lupus

Women who have lupus may experience the same reactions as those who don’t have lupus. These women have the same reactions of anxiety, insomnia, or headaches that everyone else does when experiencing stress.

There are many symptoms that can occur. With everything from irritable bowel syndrome to asthma attacks being brought on by stress, the reactions are virtually limitless. Every person will experience their own set of reactions when coping with stress.

Stressful Reactions That Bring on the Onset Of lupus

The causes of Lupus are currently unknown. It is believed that certain genetic factors can play a part in who develops Lupus and who does not. However, it is also believed that some women experience environmental factors that cause Lupus.

Studies on Lupus have shown that some women experience the onset of Lupus due to a stressful situation. While it is not believed that stress can cause Lupus it is thought that the factors are already present and stress is simply the trigger.

Why it is a significant trigger is unknown. However, it is a fact that many people develop the signs and symptoms of Lupus soon after a major stress such as an illness or death in the family or a major financial crisis.

Lupus Flare-Ups Brought On By Stress

It is known that women who have Lupus can experience flare ups due to stress. Lupus symptoms normally include fatigue, stiffness, joint pain, fevers, or a general lack of well being. When stress is experienced, these symptoms can become worse, or flare up.

You may be feeling perfectly fine and then one stressful episode will throw you into the throws of several lupus symptoms. Doctors are learning that stress has a significant impact on the disease.

For this reason many doctors are recommending stress management as a treatment to alleviate lupus symptoms.

While stress may or may not be a direct cause for lupus it is widely believed that it does have an impact on the quality of life Lupus patients experience. While stress cannot always be eliminated from daily life, it is possible to reduce it.

In order to live a healthy lifestyle, with less symptoms of lupus, you should try to learn stress management techniques, and reduce or eliminate stress triggers from your life.

You may find that exercises such as yoga or meditation can help to reduce stress levels and therefore reduce the symptoms of lupus.

Discoid lupus is an auto-immune disease that leads to chronic swelling in the skin.

Auto-immune diseases occur when your body’s tissues are attacked by its own immune system. The exact cause of this disease is unknown, although it is known to be hereditary.

Discoid lupus can lead you to develop unusual antibodies in your blood that are targeted against your own body tissues.

This is a chronic inflammation and scarring of the skin which most often occurs on your face, ears and scalp.

How does discoid lupus appear?

Usually, the lesions appear as red, inflamed patches with a scaling and grumpy look. When lesions develop in hairy areas like the scalp, it results in permanent scarring or hair loss [preventing hair loss].

Some people with discoid lupus can have diseases of the internal organs, which make them sicker. Kids and adults with various spots are at a greater risk of these. Cigarette smoke and sunlight cause the lesions to appear.

How to treat discoid lupus?

Applying cortisone ointment on the affected skin areas will improve the lesions and decrease the progression of the disease. Injecting cortisone into the lesions can also treat discoid lupus and are more effective than cortisone ointments.

Alternatively, you can use pimecrolimus cream, tacrolimus and calcineurin inhibitor ointments. Also, Imiquimod reported as effective in some patients.

If your skin is sensitive to sunlight, then it is necessary to wear UVB/UVA blocking sunscreens daily while you are outdoors.

Systemic lupus erythermatosus, commonly referred as lupus, is a chronic inflammatory disease which mostly affects women rather than men.

It is an auto immune disease which mainly attacks on various tissues, cells and organs of your body, causing damage and dysfunction to the immune system.

Systemic lupus is a chronic illness which is mainly characterized by periods depending up on the disease activity.

For some persons the activity of the disease can be minimal which can be treated with simple medications and for others it can create serious inflammatory problems.

This inflammation can mainly affect lungs, heart, blood vessels, joints, skin, liver, kidneys and nervous system.

The main cause behind this inflammation is still unknown. Depending up on the signs and symptoms, systemic lupus is categorized into different types [Identifying lupus type].

Discoid lupus erythermatosus: If the inflammation is mainly on the skin, then it is called cutaneous or discoid lupus. You can easily identify this inflammation with rashes on face, neck and also on the scalp. Very rarely, discoid lupus can lead to systemic lupus. It is not probable to predict who will develop the most serious form of inflammation.

Drug induced lupus erythermatosus: This type of inflammation can be developed due to the usage of certain prescribed medications. Not every one of you who take these medicines can develop this lupus.

Only some persons, whose immune system does not support these drugs, can be affected with this kind of inflammation. The symptoms which are caused due to this can usually go away when you stop the usage of the medicines.

Neonatal lupus: This is very rare form of lupus which rarely affects newborn babies through mother. If you have certain antibodies which are linked with auto immune diseases, then there is a chance for your newborn baby to get affected with this inflammation. Even if you don’t have any symptoms or signs of auto immune disease, it can pass through the developing fetus.

Other factors which can lead to systemic lupus:

Genetic links: The exact reason for the systemic lupus is still unknown. Inherited viruses and genes play an important role in developing this chronic inflammation in you.

If your first degree relative (mother, father, brother, sister) patients are suffering with this illness, then there is a chance for you to get affected with systemic lupus. Identical twins can also have a greater risk of developing this disease.

Environmental factors: Certain environmental factors like exposure to ultra violet light, pollution can also be the causes for systemic lupus.

Pregnancy and menstruation: For most of the women, this chronic inflammation worsens after ovulation rather than the initial stages of menstruation period.

It has been proved that excess amounts of estrogen is the main reason behind the development of the disease. So, it is always advisable for you to take lower levels of estrogen to avoid the problem [Effects of lupus on pregnant woman].

Self care tips at home:

If you are suffering with systemic lupus, then it is necessary for you to follow these steps in order to get relief from the illness.

People suffering with lupus should get adequate rest, as they often experience constant weakness, which is different from normal tiredness.

Do not expose your skin to harmful ultra violet rays of sun. Always be sure to wear long sleeved clothes whenever you go out from your home and try to apply sun block to your skin.

Smoking increases the certainty of cardio vascular diseases. So, try to avoid it.

Eat healthy food and maintain good and balanced diet. Regular exercises are always helpful in treating all kinds of illness and help you to be healthy and fit.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is more common in women than men.

It is found that the ratio of SLE in women to men is nine to one. Although systemic lupus erythematosus is a rare disease, it is recognized globally.

The effect of systemic lupus erythematosus on the body involves various systems [Lupus symptoms].

The manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus on various body systems:

The manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus can develop in the form of waves called flares or flare-ups.

These flares develop differently in various body systems, including membranes, muscles and bones, skin, lungs, digestive system, kidneys, nervous system and blood.

Membranes

Membranes that surround the internal organs such as heart, lungs, and organs of abdomen get inflamed. The inflammation of serous membrane in SLE is known as serositis.

This condition in SLE patients can affect pericardium, the membrane of the heart. It also leads to the development of pleurisy, the swelling of the membrane of the lungs.

Muscles and bones

Joint pain is very common in patients with SLE. The pain can last for a longer period or can come and go periodically. Systemic lupus erythematosus can affect almost all joints in the body, but mostly it affects the joints of the wrists, hands, and knees. Once affected, both sides of the same joint will be affected.

The SLE patients with this condition can come across muscle pain and swollen muscle tissue. In advanced stages, the condition can develop into osteonecrosis where the bone tissues of affected areas can die.

Skin

SLE also affects the skin where skin rashes can develop on almost any area of the body. The most common areas are the cheeks and the area across the nose. The rash in these areas is known as the butterfly rash, which will be red and itchy. People with SLE are sensitive to sun rays. Exposing to the sun for a little while can develop into a skin rash.

Lungs

Systemic lupus erythematosus in some patients lead to the development of pleuritis, an inflammation of pleural cavity that surrounds the lungs. With this, the sufferer experiences pain in the chest while breathing.

A long standing inflammation of this condition can develop into shrinking lung syndrome, the scarring of lungs. Pneumonia, an inflammation of lungs, can also develop in patients with SLE [Preventing lung disease].

Digestive system

SLE patients mostly come across problems with the stomach and intestines where loss of appetite, pain in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting are common manifestations.

Kidneys

People with SLE usually develop nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) where kidneys lose their capability to eliminate toxins from the body. Some patients can experience swelling in the ankles while others find no pain at all. The most common sign of kidney inflammation is unusual urine.

Nervous system

Headaches and abnormal blood vessels in the head are the problems with the effect of SLE on nervous system. Organic brain syndrome also develops where problems with memory and concentration, agitation and hallucinations occurs.

Blood and blood vessels

The effect of SLE on blood can develop into leucopenia (low white blood cells count), anemia (low red blood cells count), and/or thrombocytopenia (low platelets count). With this, SLE patients are at risk for developing blood clots. Vasculitis (an inflammation of blood vessels) also develops where it affects the circulation of blood.

The flare-ups of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can be managed easily with several lupus treatment options. So, consult your doctor and find the right treatment option to manage your flare-ups.

Lupus is also referred to as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects your immune system, which fights against the organisms that cause infections to your body.

It has been found that about nine out of ten people who have lupus are women.

If you are with lupus disease, then it slowly develops with lupus symptoms, which usually come and go.

In some rare cases, lupus can cause serious as well as life-threatening problems.

Actually, with lupus, your immune system loses its ability to differentiate the foreign substances with the body’s own cells and makes the mistake of attacking your body’s healthy cells.

Therefore, lupus can damage nearly any part of your body including your joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain. However, the lupus symptoms will vary from individual to individual where no two persons experience identical lupus symptoms. [Lupus type]

The lupus symptoms can range from mild to severe and can vary over time. The common lupus symptoms include muscle pain, strange fever, chest pain upon deep breathing, skin rashes, hair loss, sensitivity to the sun, swelling in legs or around eyes, painful joints, swollen glands, pale or purple fingers, fatigue, mouth ulcers, and weight loss.

Skin rashes are very common. A rash called butterfly or molar rash may appear across your nose and cheeks. You may also notice some other rashes on the face and ears, chest, shoulders, upper arms and hands.

In some rare cases, the lupus disease in your body affects only single system such as the skin or joints. Even, the way in which your body system is affected also differs from person to person. Joints and muscles, causing arthritis and muscle pain are most common.

You can also notice lupus symptoms with the way the lupus affects the systems in your body:

Kidneys: The lupus affects the kidneys by causing inflammation of the kidneys (also called nephritis). This inflammation damages the ability of the kidneys to excrete waste products and other toxins from the body effectively.

Usually, you don’t find pain with kidney inflammation. You can identify this kidney disease with the indication of an abnormal urine or blood test.

Lungs: Lupus disease can affect lungs causing pleuritis, an inflammation of the lining of the chest cavity that causes chest pain while breathing. You may also get pneumonia.

Central nervous system: In some cases, lupus affects the brain or central nervous system, where you experience headaches, dizziness, memory disturbances, vision problems, or changes in behavior.

Blood vessels: Even blood vessels also become inflammatory, where it affects the way of blood circulation in your body. This inflammation may be mild or may be severe and require immediate attention.

Blood: People with lupus may develop anemia, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia. With lupus disease, you may have abnormalities that cause higher risk for blood clots.

Heart: Even heart gets inflammation (myocarditis and endocarditis) or the membrane that surrounds it (pericarditis), leads to chest pain or other lupus symptoms. Even atherosclerosis may develop with heart inflammation.

You have been told that your skin rashes resemble lupus disease, where there is no cure.

Despite of the fact that there is no known cure for lupus disease, you have many treatments that give relief from lupus symptoms.

Lupus is a widespread and chronic autoimmune disease that mostly affects women.

If you are suffering with lupus disease, then it causes your immune system to turn against the body’s own cells, tissue, and organs. Immune system produces antibodies to fight against bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms that cause infection.

It is fact that with the lupus disease, your immune system loses the ability to differentiate the foreign substances with the body’s own cells, organs as well as tissues and produces antibodies that attacks the body’s healthy tissue where inflammation and damages occurs to vital organs such as skin, joints, blood, heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain.

The reality is that lupus disease symptoms vary from person to person. No two people with lupus disease exhibit same symptoms.

The most common lupus symptoms are: skin rashes, achy joints, strange fever, arthritis, prolonged fatigue, anemia, swollen ankles, chest pain upon deep breathing, skin rashes across cheeks and nose sensitivity to sun, hair loss, abnormal blood clotting, pale or purple fingers, seizures, mouth ulcers.

If you find any of these lupus symptoms, then immediately go for early diagnosis and proper treatment, which can help control the lupus symptoms and reduce the possibility of having permanent damage to organs or tissue.

Once a lupus diagnosis is done, you will be evaluated to notice if there is any damage to your organs. However, the treatment depends upon the activity and extent of the disease in your body.

After examining your condition carefully, your doctor may prescribe you few medications. Depending upon your lupus condition, if necessary, need to undergo therapy, make diet changes as well as lifestyle changes.

Actually, there are many medications, approved by researchers, to treat lupus disease. The medications include:

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS): to relieve achy joints and arthritis in mild lupus disease where your pain is slight and organs are not affected.

Anti-malarial medication: Drugs such as Hydroxycholorquine will be prescribed to help relieve your skin rashes or arthritis.

Corticosteroids: Used for major organ involvement but the dosage will depend upon the type of organ involvement, its symptoms, and blood-test results.

Immunosuppressive agents: The agents such as azathioprine, methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, cyclosporine, and mycophenolate mofetil will be prescribe to help control the overactive but misdirected immune system.

Apart from these medications, you can follow some tricks to eliminate your lupus disease: with a lupus flare – always be careful to take sufficient rest.

If your lupus is in remission – try to do exercise for flexibility of your joints; if sensitive to sun – apply sunscreen; if your rashes continues – consult your doctor before using a cortisone cream

In these recent years, the method of diagnosing and treating lupus has changed a lot. Still scientists and doctors are working to find a cure for lupus disease. Let us hope for the best cure for lupus disease. What do you say!

Owing to the fact that it involves damages to the body’s own tissues, cells, and organs with the immune system’s disability in determining the foreign organisms (antigens) with the body’s own cells and tissue, lupus is defined as an autoimmune disease.

The immune system is responsible for producing proteins called antibodies to protect your body against viruses, bacteria, and other foreign organisms (antigens).

The lupus disease causes inflammation and damage to vital organs such as skin, joints, blood, heart, lungs, kidneys, and even the brain.

Lupus is a rare condition where majority of people affecting with are women. You as a woman can affect with this disease in many different ways depending on the type of lupus present.

The types of lupus are systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), discoid lupus erythematosus, drug-induced lupus and neonatal lupus.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, (SLE) is the most common and serious type. Most often, the term “lupus” refers to the systemic form of the disease. The word “systemic” means the disease can affect many parts of the body.

The SLE causes a wide variety of unspecific symptoms, ranging from mild to severe. As no two people with SLE have identical lupus symptoms, it is very difficult to diagnose. Moreover, SLE often requires enduring combination treatments.

Although it is fact that SLE affects mostly women aged between 15-40, it also affects the very young or the elderly ones.

Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (cutaneous) is a type that mostly affects the skin. A rash that may appear on the face, neck, and scalp identifies it. Due to lack of proper treatment, the cutaneous can become systemic over the course of time.

In the primary stages of progression, cutaneous produces inflammation and rashes. Eventually, the rashes become prominent, thick, increase in size and may cause scarring.

Even if these rashes may recover or clear up completely with suitable treatment, they may tend to re-occur after a certain period of time.

Drug-induced lupus, a rare type, occurs in consequence of medication intolerance. Mostly, you experience lupus symptoms very similar to systemic lupus such as rash, strange fever, arthritis, and pulmonary and coronary infections.

On the other hand, this type of lupus symptoms often disappears completely once you stop administering the causative drugs.

The most common drugs identified for the cause of drug-induced lupus are: methyldopa (Aldomet), hydralazine (Apresoline), isoniazid (INH), procainamide (Procan), phenytoin (Dilantin), quinidine (Quinaglute) and carbamazepine (Tegretol).

Neonatal lupus, the last type, is a very rare disease affecting newborn babies of women with systemic lupus erythematosus or other similar autoimmune diseases.

If you are a pregnant with SLE or other related autoimmune disorders, then you need to be under a doctor’s care till your delivery because the infants affected with lupus often suffer from circulatory and congenital heart problems.

When your disease is diagnosed on time, then your infant’s life anticipation and the whole condition can be improved with treatment. Remember, on time medical contribution is more essential for those who suspected with neonatal lupus.
